Flower Power

Flower

What You'll Need:

Flower Power is a variation on musical chairs. Instead of trying to sit on a chair when the music stops, kids will try to step on to one of the rainforest flowers found in It's a Big Big World.

How to Prepare:

  1. Print out enough copies of the flower pieces so you have one less than the number of participants.
  2. Cut out all of the flowers and put several pieces of double-sided tape, or pieces of regular tape rolled with the sticky-side out, on the back of each flower. (You may want to use masking tape to ensure the flowers stick.)
  3. In an open area of the room, tape the flowers in a circle or oval shape on the floor.

How to Play:

  1. Have the guests remove their shoes and socks and stand in a ring outside the flowers.
  2. Tell them that, just like musical chairs, when the music starts, they should walk around in a circle. When the music stops, they should try to hop onto a flower. The person who does not land on a flower will be out. Remind the guests that they cannot push anyone off of a flower.
  3. Start the music from your player, or use one of the It's a Big Big World songs from http://pbskids.org/bigbigworld/music.html, and tell the children to start walking around the flowers.
  4. After the music stops, and one player is out, ask the children to step off of their flowers, and go back into a circle.
  5. Remove one flower, so there is again one less flower than the number of players. Continue until one player is left the winner. (As the game progresses, remove flowers from alternating sides to keep the flowers in a circle or oval shape. Also, don't allow the music to play for too long at each turn to keep the game moving quickly.)

Fun Fact!

Sunflowers move from east to west through the day so the flowers can face the sun!
