Millie’s Calm Down Jar

Shake up this jar and take slow, deep breaths as the glitter falls.

Everyone feels scared at times. Being scared can make us shake, breathe really fast, and feel a little out of control. Next time you feel scared or anxious, give this special jar a shake. Then take nice slow breaths until both you and the glitter settle down.

 Time: 5 minutes

  • Jar with lid (an olive jar works well)
  • Water
  • Glycerin (you can find this at a drug store)
  • Glitter
  • Food coloring

1. Pour a few tablespoons of glitter into a jar

2. Add a few drops of glycerin

3. Fill the jar with water

4. Add food coloring if desired

5. Screw on the lid

6. Shake

7. Breathe calmly until the glitter in the jar settles

Take It Further:

It’s challenging for children to take slow, deep breaths when they’re already anxious or scared. So start by having your child practice taking in slow, deep breaths when he or she is already calm. Each breath should be deep enough to make the belly expand when inhaling. Once your child masters this technique when calm, you can encourage him or her to try it out when he or she is feeling scared or upset.

You can also talk to your children about times they feel scared.
