jackson reception

I am in Jackson and am still having difficulty receiving WLJT's digital signal. The local electronic stores can offer little advice other than get cable or satellite. Does anyone receive the signal in Jackson and what antenna are you using? Are we too close to the station? I did recieve the signal a few times when I disconnected my new antenna and used a very old simple set of rabbit ears that we had saved. The tv cannot lock on the signal for very long. On clear days and nights I cannot find your signal at all. Does it skip over the areas close to the antenna?

Reception

Ken, make sure you are using a UHF antenna and channel scan each time you rotate your antenna. Since the only time you received a signal is when you used rabbit ears, perhaps you've got a preamp in line that is bad(or a VHF amp instead of a UHF), or one of the leads is not tight. Try rotating a few degrees at a time until you find a place that is reliable(and channel scan each time). You should not have any problems receiving WLJT in Jackson. Thanks and good luck.

We can't get CH 11 since you stopped analog back in Feb...Neither can our elderly parents, 100yds from us, nor several neighbors within a mile (by air) of us.

We've lived here 30+ years and never had a problem getting your analog signal.

Knowing we'd have problems from the transition, since we live so rural, we purchased a Winegard HD 8200U High Defintion Platinum VHF/UHF/FM Antenna, a Winegard AP 8275 Chromstar 2000 Series VHF/UHF Pre Amplifier and a high-end Phillips antenna rotor before the Feb transition date.

We also got a DTVPAL Plus Digital Converter Box for our older TV and purchased a new Visio digital TV, trying to cover all our bases...(We're recently retired & TV is a major pastime). So, I'm sure the equipment is adequate.

I can get Nashville's PBS(CH8.1), KET's PBS(CH21.1)plus their sub channels with no problem when I aim the antenna in their direction. We also get the Memphis & Nashville Network stations with very little "pixilazation", depending on the WX of course.

According to the FCC's info, your signal should be "moderate" for our address. But, WLJT (digital) has NEVER picked up on any of the multiple scans I've done (moving the antenna a little as I went) so it doesn't even show up on our channel list, much less tune in for viewing.

The FCC DTV Reception map shows your tower in line with WBBJ's tower from us...WBBJ picks up strong of course (and FOX 16.1).

The town of Lexington is only 35 road miles from us (surely much less by air). And, your tower on the map doesn't look any further. We're high up on a ridge at 608ft above sea level (the highest ridge in the county is only 612ft) and it's basically down hill to where the map shows your tower.

So, we're stymied as to the problem...Granted since we get channels 8 & 21, 11 may be redundant, but you all do have different programing at times and we would like to be able to tune you in.

Thanks

Rose, Thanks for keeping us in your viewing wish list. We are all trying to figure out why these little, "dark" pockets exist. As time goes on we will be able to conduct signal strength tests around the region. In the meantime, most professional antenna installers can and should conduct these tests to assure proper placement of a customer's antenna. UHF signals have always been tricky and the digital world seems to have magnified the problems. We are also analyzing the possibility of increasing our signal strength - but that takes time and FCC approval.

I cannot get your signal. Any suggestions for an antenna in the Parsons area?

In reply to Hank Thomas:

Hank, We are equally confused by the reception problems South of Lexington and into the Parson's area. Many folks well within range are having difficulty. As for antenna... a UHF, specifically tuned to receive channels 20-60 is required. WLJT transmits on channel 47 in the digital world. The antennas work best outside and up high and point it toward out broadcast tower between Lexington and Jackson. Remember to rescan your channels each time you move the antenna.

If anyone has found a way to get good reception in the Pope area of Lexington, I would love to hear about antenna, orientation. Thanks.

In reply to Gene:

Hello Gene,
Pope appears to be about 16 miles from WLJT's transmitter and as such you should not have any problem picking us up with almost any UHF antenna. (The outside antennas work much better). I would suggest a compass heading of about 100 degrees (a bit south of due west). Don't forget to do a channel scan after you move your antenna. I would recommend rotating the antenna a few degrees in each direction until you get a lock.
Thanks and good luck!

Hornbeak is pretty close to the "fringe" area of our signal. Most of the other channels you mentioned are more powerful than us. We are exploring the possibility of increasing our output power - but that will take some time and some cost/benefit analysis. A small increase in output requires a much larger electrical input. In the meantime, some things to check - antenna height (may need to increase), direction antenna is pointing (head-on is best), signal boosters in-line or at the antenna, and rescanning or hard-punching our channel into your receiver (UHF-47).
