This three-part series explores the fragile relationship between people and the natural world they inhabit. The first episode, "On the Brink," investigates how severe environmental problems can lead to political crises and increased hostilities around the world. Locations include Haiti, the Indian sub-continent, the Middle East, South Africa, Mexico, Zimbabwe and the United States.

Why do you think certain countries like Bangladesh, Haiti or Peru are so plagued by cycles of political violence and revolution?

How do you think the state of the environment affects national security? Aside from environmental pressures, what other elements do you think contributed to the political instability or violence in these examples?

Why do you think South Africa has been able to recover from the devastating effects of Apartheid and decades of environmental degradation? How do you think the political regime in Haiti has contributed to its environmental degradation?

According to the United Nations Environmental Fund, Kenya's forest cover has dwindled to 1.7 percent due to uncontrolled logging. The Kenyan government will be asking their citizens to devote their idle land to planting trees. How would you react if the U.S government imposed laws asking you to plant trees or other crops on your land?

Do you think protection and conservation of the environment is a feasible solution to the growing political and social instability in these countries?

How do you think the issues explored in this film have an impact on people living in the United States?

How does the quality of the environment in your community contribute to political or social disaccord?

Do you agree with Thomas Homer-Dixon at the end of the film when he states: "We have to recognize that the rich countries on this planet have a significant responsibility to the poor countries... And to the extent that we don't deal with those gaps..., we are going to suffer."?
