The PBS documentary series POV is currently accepting applications for interns on a rolling basis for spring and summer 2016.

About the organization

American Documentary, Inc. (AmDoc) is a Brooklyn-based nonprofit arts organization and producer of the award-winning PBS documentary series POV ("point of view") and the new series America ReFramed. For 28 years, AmDoc has produced and presented over 400 of the most significant documentary films of our time, engaging public television audiences with perspectives that reflect the diversity of American society and putting a human face on critical issues. POV films have won every major film and broadcasting award, including 35 Emmys, 18 George Foster Peabody Awards, 12 Alfred I. duPont-Columbia Broadcast Journalism Awards, three Academy Awards and the Prix Italia.

What you will experience

Interns at American Documentary, Inc. are provided training and mentorship through our hands-on program, designed to provide a comprehensive, educational experience in the documentary field. We are commited to working with individual interns to meet their unique learning objectives.

Internships are unpaid, but travel stipends are available and college credit can be arranged. Non-students may also apply.

Internship Opportunities

America ReFramed Intern

America ReFramed, produced in partnership with WGBH World Channel, showcases documentary films that focus on American stories which emphasize diversity, personal narratives, and new perspectives that don't usually get featured in mainstream media. Qualified candidates will work closely with Series Producer, Associate Producer, and/or Production and Programming Assistant in all aspects of the creation and management of the program.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Screening programmed films, selecting excerpts for promo, grant applications, and flagging language, video and text content for FCC compliance
  • Research issues, themes and people to produce episodes
  • Building and managing submission and programming database
  • Building and managing deliverables tracking grids and library
  • Crafting and coordinating program's social media activities and infrastructure
  • Liaising and coordinating with independent producers, filmmakers, distributors for program deliverables
  • Assist in coordinating production and post production schedules and tasks with AmDoc, outside production company(ies) and vendors, PR Consultant, Series Host
  • Working with other interns and/or part-time staff as needed
  • Additional related production office responsibilities as required (i.e. filing, answering phone calls, petty cash management, generating simple expense reports, etc.)

Arts Management

The internship is designed to give first-hand experience in nonprofit management and development for arts, culture, and media. The internship will provide exposure to the comprehensive management activities required of a leading media arts non-profit organization. The intern will learn about the national funding landscape; program impact; non-profit policies at the federal, state and local level; and the various stakeholders in the public arts and media field. Activities include: framing and pitching programs, describing theories of change, drafting proposals, fundraising, maintaining a CRM, and researching prospective funders using leading industry search engines.

This is an exciting job for a candidate interested in nonprofit management in the field of arts, culture, and media. Ideal candidates will be able to commit to a minimum of 15 hours per week.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Research new prospective funding sources including individual philanthropists, private foundations, government and corporate prospects.
  • Create prospect profiles and briefing documents.
  • Support the preparation and production of proposals, reports and presentations, as needed.
  • Assist with data entry and organization of databases, files, and CRM.
  • Other tasks as needed.

Communications and Marketing Intern

We need motivated individuals with an interest in documentaries and the media, who are eager to learn about publicity and marketing. Required skills: Administrative experience and computer skills a must, excellent written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail; ability to juggle multiple projects. Knowledge of Abode Photoshop helpful.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Developing and maintaining media databases using Cision, Filemaker Pro and Excel
  • Researching and tracking press clips to create detailed reports for filmmakers, funders and staff
  • Updating filmmaker itinerary with press interview schedule
  • Managing internal and external distribution of press releases and media alerts
  • Assisting with the coordination of press kit and DVD mailings to national media
  • Order and log all television and radio interviews in POV tape library
  • Assisting department personnel as needed

Community Engagement and Education

Interns will have the opportunity to work with communities around the country to raise awareness around the social issues presented in POV films. Through assisting in national strategic outreach campaigns, organizing community screenings and producing accompanying educational materials, interns will get firsthand experience in engaging audiences prior to and well beyond a film's broadcast.

Experience with Photoshop, InDesign, and HMTL coding a plus, but not required. Ideal candidates will be able to commit to a minimum of 2-4 full work days during the week, for at least a 3 month period.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct research on prospective community partners
  • Reach out to and develop relationships with community partners (via phone and email) to facilitate screenings and discussion events nationwide┬á
  • Assist in research for the development of educational materials (discussion guides, lesson plans, reading lists)
  • Update the department's web pages and email blasts using basic HTML coding
  • Create and update printed materials using Photoshop, InDesign, and/or PowerPoint
  • Assist in managing the department's social media accounts, including Twitter, Facebook, the POV blog and others
  • Provide administrative support for the department, such as mailing out screening packages and processing event applications and evaluations
  • Maintain audience evaluation database
  • Support the preparation of conference proposals and grant reports as needed
  • Other administrative duties as needed

POV Digital

Interns in POV's Webby Award-winning Digital department will get an inside peek at POV's 29th season of independent documentaries on PBS while researching and producing content for POV's popular film companion sites on, blogs and social media.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Multimedia production (Photoshop and Final Cut) for
  • Assisting in developing features for documentary companion websites
  • Supporting POV's communities on Facebook, Twitter and other social networks
  • Organizing chats with filmmakers and experts
  • Moderating viewer comments
  • Researching and writing posts and features for POV's blog, Facebook page and website

Producation & Programming

POV Production & Programming interns will go hands-on with the 1,000+ submissions for PBS broadcast consideration, watching films and helping to maintain our yearly Call for Entries. Once programs are selected, you'll be generating related video and DVD content, as well as preparing materials for national broadcast.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Cutting and packaging video files in Final Cut Pro
  • Assisting on set with filmmaker interview shoots
  • Authoring professional quality DVDs
  • Designing film packaging materials in Photoshop and Illustrator
  • Managing our submissions database and viewing films
