Premiere Date: August 21, 2007
Synopsis
In the darkness outside of our cities, there are lights that we have forgotten how to see. Alice laments the loss of her view of the universe, one of her initial reasons for living in the country. The change in her environment is the result of "security lighting" for a large corporate storage facility. (6 minutes)

Gerstein Film Nails It
this thoughtful film made its point in an innovative imaginative way.
years ago when i left new york city, i was so pleased that at my new home i could actually see stars overhead. they're gone now...victims of gradual urban sprawl and development.
there is a peace that comes from natural darkness. night time, the dark time, was when we rested, regengerated, calmed ourselves cloaked in the peace of darkness. it was also a time of wonder tinged with fear. what might be out there? an animal? who knows? what was that sound?
night time, the dark time is also supposed to be the time that separates the events and tasks of one day from the next. ariana gerstein's film makes me wonder: "do we, like the lights, have to be 'on' all the time? and if so, at what price?"
interesting film...will be talking about it alot!

I'm so glad to see POV broadcasting a work that doesn't fall within the boundaries of non-fiction practice.

I would wither and die if I couldn't see the stars...
This short was very thought provoking. The statistics were startling. And very sad and depressing.
I do my part to put a damper on Light Pollution. I bought my immediate neighbours some hoods for their obnoxious lights they have atop tall poles. At least the light doesn't flood onto my property as much anymore.
Where I live, when it's dark, it's DARK. Can't see yer hand in front of yer face except for a night lit by a full moon. I love it when we have power outages. The night sky really opens up to a whole other realm.

I missed it! :(
does anyone know where I could find this documentary? It sounds so interesting... I just caught the end where it was saying "there was a black out in Los Angeles..." It caught my attention so much...

Don't want to see the light anymore!
I sooo agree with Ariana. I noticed it in the burbs. The street lights, then the new addition at the high school across the street, then the swim park... now it's always dusk at my mom's. I live in Chicago, so I have to take a vacation just to be in the dark. I can't get it in the burbs anymore. I understand that they do it to deter crime. But, it has got to end! We can't sustain it! At some point we have to start trusting people again. Perhaps do motion detector lights everywhere. There has got to be a solution! There has got to be a greener way. I say we start complaining! Light and Sound pollution are huge problems in the modern world.
