President Obama and His “Entourage”

by |

Entourage DVD coverLast summer I wrote a post riffing off of a Bill Moyers Journal blog post asking you what one documentary you thought the next president should screen in the White House. Responses included Sicko, An Incovenient Truth and Our Brand is Crisis, among others.

Earlier this month, Politico.com offered a glimpse at some of the media choices President Obama (and presumably his family) are making on the White House boob tube. And the news is… umm, not that great, actually.

He says his favorite show is HBO’s Entourage, which is cool and hip sure, but let’s face it, hardly edifying fare. The other shows he listed were Hannah Montana and Sponge Bob, which he watches with the first daughters, and sporting events.

I’m a little surprised. No PBS?

Besides POV, natch, what TV shows do you wish the president was watching?

Every time I hear or read a news story about the state of the auto industry I wish Obama – and everyone in America who cares about the workers in Detroit – would see WHO KILLED THE ELECTRIC CAR?

I had no idea before I viewed this film how recently electric cars were a real possibility as recently as the 1990s!

We need to get President Obama a set of the Planet Earth dvds. I understand he has to relax and escape the policy world a bit when he’s flipping on the television… but Entourage?
As far as Hannah Montana and Spongebob, old man Catauro is not really sure what else kids could be watching these days. It wouldn’t be too helpful of me to reminisce about old episodes of Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego

Oh good. After I posted that, I thought I was being too harsh. I’m all for relaxing and tuning out with the TV — we all have our guilty faves — but there’s so much good and entertaining stuff on TV these days, I was just surprised at his choices.
I’m guessing — if he has the time, which I can understand if he doesn’t — he also watches great shows like Frontline and Nova and Battlestar Gallactica, but didn’t want to sound like a dork. (That’s my hope, anyway.)

    Sascha,
Thanks for your comment. I totally agree with you. We actually did a special feature on the electric car featuring Chris Paine, the star of Who Killed the Electric Car? before his film premiered in 2004.
For those of you with a short attention span, this video explains what happened (but you should rent the movie, too. It’s really great.):

No one here has commented yet on Obama’s fascination with HBO’s “The Wire”.
Sure we can bash Entourage for its values, but because of Rham’s ties we let it slide quietly. Hannah Montana and Sponge Bob, those were prob Bush’s first choices to watch, but Obama’s girls most likely are holding the remote there.
“The Wire” is a show not to be passed off slightly as mere television, or looked at as the opposite of a documentary. It’s one of the closest pieces of fiction to a documentary. Rich in cultural perspectives and views of a modern day, industrial, America. With the knowledge that Obama watches this show gives me personally more confidence that he has an idea what challenges need to be conquered and what damages need to be repaired.
This is also to say he and I see eye to eye on our favorite character of the show. Omar. Barack said to J. Patrick Coolican of the Las Vegas Sun “He’s this gay gangster who only robs drug dealers, and then gives back. You know, he’s sort of a Robin Hood. And he’s the toughest, baddest guy on this show, but he’s gay, you know. And it’s really interesting. It’s a fascinating character.”
Somehow I don’t see anyone from the Bush camp recognizing a character such as Omar exists anytime soon.

Ah, yes, the Messiah Obama is soooooo smart. The reason he likes Entourage is that it is as he is–a lot of flash but very little substance.

Oh, come on people! Does it really matter to you what President Obama watches? I mean really … get a life, will ya?
