Time 100 coverLate last week, TIME magazine published its 2011 TIME 100 list, featuring a group they deem to be “the most influential in the world.” TIME describes those chosen as people whose “ideas spark dialogue and dissent and sometimes even revolution.”

Cory Booker and Patti Smith (Martin Schoeller; Marco Grob for TIME)

This year’s list includes two POV alumni: Newark, N.J., mayor Cory Booker (Street Fight, POV 2005) and musician, poet and author Patti Smith (Patti Smith: Dream of LIfe, POV 2009).

Booker’s profile is written by none other than Oprah Winfrey (also on the list), who begins by calling him a genius. After an unsuccessful run for the Newark mayoralty in 2002 (chronicled in Marshall Curry’s Academy award-nominated Street Fight), Booker was elected in 2006. He has been Newark’s mayor ever since. Winfrey concludes by saying she hopes Booker will run for national office. Read Cory Booker’s entry in The 2011 TIME 100 »

Patti Smith is profiled by her friend and frequent collaborator Michael Stipe, lead singer of R.E.M. He chides TIME for not featuring Smith on its cover in 1976, when she was releasing albums like “Horses” and “Radio Ethiopia”. He asks TIME to consider putting her on the cover in 2011, a year he likens to one from the 1970s in which “we face a new era of sweeping changes combatting an even deeper cynicism and intolerance.” Read Patti Smith’s entry in The 2011 TIME 100 »
