Was it a “You ain’t heard nothing yet” moment for independent filmmaking auteurs?

Directors (and audiences) started to see the potential for 3-D documentary storytelling with the theatrical releases of Werner Herzog’s Cave of Forgotten Dreams, Wim Wenders’s Pina and, yes, let’s include the hit concert documentary Justin Bieber: Never Say Never.
