Albert Maysles with his Grey Gardens subject, Little Edie

Upon hearing that Grey Gardens, the seminal documentary he directed with his brother David in 1975, along with Ellen Hovde and Muffie Meyer, had finished in first place in POV’s Greatest Documentaries of All Time poll, Albert Maysles had this to say:

When Big Edie was dying, Little Edie turned to her at that last moment and asked if there was something more she wanted to say. “There’s nothing more to say,” replied Big Edie. “It’s all in the film.” I’m honored, and Big Edie and Little Edie would be too, that the public is so fond of them. Thank you POV fans for the appreciation, matched only by the appreciation from the Beales themselves.
