‘Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin’ Streaming Free – But Only For Two Days!

by |

We are happy to announce that Brother Outsider is available for free streaming on the POV site in honor of the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington. The streaming is made possible through the World Channel series America ReFramed.

During his 60-year career as an activist, Bayard Rustin formulated many of the strategies, including nonviolent resistance, that propelled the American civil rights movement. In 1963, Rustin brought his unique skills to the crowning glory of his civil rights career: his work organizing the March on Washington, the biggest protest America had ever seen. But his open homosexuality forced him to remain in the background, marking him again and again as a “brother outsider.” On August 8, 2013, President Barack Obama named Bayard Rustin a posthumous recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

To commemorate the March on Washington, PBS will be featuring extensive programming remembering the historical event. Visit the PBS Black Culture Connection website to learn more, hear and watch stories from the March, and check the broadcast schedule for programming related to the anniversary.
