RFP General Information:

POV will award grants up to $15,000 to select public television stations to produce local content to support efforts to reach their local communities through an outreach plan that engages diverse audiences.

Working with the filmmakers and partners around the country, the campaign leverages the national broadcast of Brooklyn Castle and American Promise to target young people, educators, parents and caretakers, to inspire discussions around and solutions to the achievement gap between white middle class students and those of color and/or lower socioeconomic background. To achieve this, we are looking to PBS stations to convene community conversations with administrators, parents, educators, and policymakers; and produce on-air or online programming. Stations can book education experts, stakeholders, and community leaders on local programs in conjunction with a live event, and are encouraged to produce additional programming using local stories that may also have a national resonance.

Suggested activities include:

Developing locally -produced programming for broadcast or the web focusing on at least one of the themes of the campaign; such as closing the black male achievement gap and /or exploring the academic benefits and funding allocations for extra-curricular activities and afterschool programs and/or helping young black students manage the emotional impact and real-life repercussions of unintentional biases and stereotype threat.

Organizing community screenings with local schools or community organizations. We encourage stations to invite local stakeholders and policymakers and to film these panels or invite panelists to appear on local current affairs programming. Wherever possible and when appropriate, we will make the filmmakers and/or subjects available either in person or via satellite.
