RIDGE MAHONEY For the past three decades I've been a soccer writer, broadcaster, and journalist. Shortly after my family moved from San Francisco a few miles south to the suburbs, television coverage of two fledgling American pro leagues introduced me, an avid young sports fan, to soccer. In a year two leagues became one. The survivor, the North American Soccer League, lasted 17 years before folding. During its lifespan, as I wrote about myriad topics, I encountered players and coaches and officials and fans from dozens of countries. Separated by culture, language, and history, they were joined by -- and to -- the game of feet, feints, and feigned injury, as am I. Since 1986 my employer has been Soccer America Magazine. I've written for other publications, including the Washington Post and USA Today, and since 1994 have also worked in radio and television. The sport has taken me to more than two dozen countries, including China, where I met my wife XiuPing while covering the first Women's World Cup. Along with our son, Kevin, we live in Richmond, Calif. |
