Paco is no longer required to admit guilt and while he has not been granted parole, he has been allowed leaves and furloughs as part of the re-integration system of the Spanish penal system. Under this system, an inmate who has served 1/4 of his sentence is qualified for leaves subject to approval of the prison board and, of course, good behavior. Last Christmas, Paco was finally able to spend Christmas with his family. He has also taken a short culinary course over the summer.

Paco has had to relearn skills that we take for granted - for example: figuring out train schedules and ATMs. He finds the "outside" world a bit overwhelming and sometimes forgets to look at both sides of the road when he crosses the street, but he's getting the hang of it. Although he gets these temporary leaves and can attend classes, he continues to sleep in prison every night.
