Life. Support. Music.: CD Cover - The Music of Jason Crigler

From The Music of Jason Crigler by Jason Crigler

1. "The Books on the Shelf"
2. "Through Tomorrow"

I worked on this album, released in late 2008, for nine years. It is a collection of 13 of my songs, all sung by various artists. Marshall Crenshaw, Teddy Thompson, Amy Correia, Holly Palmer and others all lent their voices to this project. I sing one song on this album, although I produced the whole record and was actively involved in choosing the singers. This album contains "The Books on the Shelf" and "Through Tomorrow," both of which are featured prominently in Life.Support.Music. "The Books on the Shelf" was the first song I wrote when I returned home after a year as an inpatient in various hospitals.

Review from All About Jazz
"Crigler's songwriting is a combination of light and dark (musically and lyrically), layered guitars, thoughtful pop orchestrations and detailed arranging instincts. His writing is the focus of the project, but the CD has an ensemble cast feeling more than that of a single star. This is by design. Every song (save one) features a different vocalist, and there are very limited jam sections. This makes for a pleasingly terse, yet varied, recording." Read full review »

Life. Support. Music.: CD Cover - Lackawanna

From Whenever the Blues Become My Only Song by Lackawanna

3. "Bahmbo"
4. "Pretty Little Thing"

This is the debut release from Lackawanna, an instrumental soul-rock jam band that I started with guitarist Adam Levy (who has performed with Norah Jones, Tracy Chapman, Sex Mob, Amos Lee and others). The other members of the band are Dan Rieser (drums) and Jonathan Maron (bass). Recorded live in 2007, this album captures the energy and spontaneity of an inventive live band.

Life. Support. Music.: CD Cover - Down Like Hail

From Down Like Hail by the Jason Crigler Band

5. "Bush and the Tree Song"
6. "She Waits for an Answer"

Down Like Hail was recorded in 2004, right before my injury, and released in 2007, by The Firm Records. This is me with my trio — I sing and play electric guitar, and I'm accompanied by bass and drums. It has a very live, exciting sound to it. I was playing all the time with these guys back then. This is the record for people who just want to hear me singing my songs, with a lot of wild guitar moments thrown in.

To me, it's an album about the blues. There aren't any actual blues songs on it, but the approach to the album and the influences come out of my love for blues and old soul music. It was all recorded live — no overdubs.

Talk About This

Just watched the Jason Crigler Biography. What an inspiring story. I had never heard his music but am familiar with some of the other musicians mentioned in the film. What courage the family showed and the conviction of his wife during this terrible struggle. I applaud all of you and to Jason I have become a fan. Your a great musician and I really enjoy your music. "Keep on pickin"

I just watched Jason and Marjorie's story on POV. On so many levels I am deeply touched. The tears are still rolling down my cheeks. I am a teacher and a mom of two teenage sons. One of my sons is an amazing guitarist. He works everything out through music and art. I have watched him evolve as a person and musician and have always known that music is healing for those that create it and for those that enjoy it. Watching the miracle that Jason and Marjorie and their friends and family created together in order to support Jason's journey back to cognition and health is more than inspiring. There really aren't words to frame what this journey is that you've captured in this presentation, nor how it can affect others such as myself. I am thinking about all the limitations supposively healthy people can make for themselves, and how this can be turned around by understanding that we really do need to join together and create a richer, more healthy and honest reality for everyone. Thank you for sharing such an incredible journey and opening yourselves up so that others might be inspired as well. God Bless!

So glad I was flipping through the channels, and was able to catch this incredible documentary. I applaud the love, strength, and belief that every member held onto. Learning about Jason's music is an added bonus.
At the end of the documentary, Monica mentioned that the journey will continue, and that there will be others who don't have family support who can be helped by them. Will you please share if there is any way that others may get involved?

In many ways this film moved me. First of all I can't think of a greater use of a filmmaker's talent than what I just watched. This was a service to mankind. And watching the film, many times I wrote Jason off. Coming back from that made me cry. I play guitar and I was happy to see it picked up again. Everybody should watch this. It reminded me of the film "Touching the Void"

I've had two AVM time-bombs to live with for over half a century, and watching this powerful documentary of Jason's experience, leaves me in awe of his inner strength, and loving, supportive family. I'm lucky thus far to have avoided a bleed, and will keep Jason as a compass to follow should my luck change down the road. I like your music too!

Thank you to Jason and to PBS for sharing such a beautiful heartwrenching story! I woke this morning with the line "where is the earth today / what if i fall today" playing over and over in my mind. Naturally I had to add Jason's music to my collection first thing this morning. I love the simple and moving lyrics.

There is a moving spiritual presence involved in this story. Many people discard and even dislike the mention of something supernatural, but in this story there is no room for denial.

There is a time-line involved , in this story, when conventional medicine , blinded by mortality , is superceded by devine intervention.

Jason has been given a rare gift , and the devine spirits of the Son of Man havd led him to spread the love of compassion and music to those - who await the journey.

I just watch this movie and I must say that it is probably one of the most touching video's and stories I have ever seen. I too have a small child of 5 and have lost years of his life due to being incarcerated through fault of only my own. I been through alot in the street's of one of the countries worst ghetto's and to see a family come together and support Jason regardless of how bleak the future looked. Has really helped me re-evaluate the importance of life and the choice's we make. How for granted I take life and the love of my family for. This is truly a Love Story in every way Love of Music,Life,Family and Significant other. Best of Luck to Jason, Monica, and baby elly..

Touching, moving, spiritual and made me cry, cry, cry. Jason's story was so touching, made me think of times in my life that I was not so fortunate, but yet I still had to live on. Life moves forward whether you are on that train or not. Thank you for taking the time to share such an amazing and miraculous story about love, endurance and commitment.

What an absolutely wonderful story! I have been moved to tears at the amount of love and devotion Jason's family has for him. When so many others fall victim to a hemorrhage and all hope is given up, you showed us how love, patience and perseverance pay off.
I am truly touched by your wonderful recovery! Continued success and God Bless!

When I was 20 I had a stroke. Eight years later, thanks to God's grace I am also doing fine. I do struggle somewhat everyday, but like Jason I have my family and am able to 'survive'. After watching this documentary, it brought it all back to perspective. I'm thrilled and happy that Jason is doing so well. Like he, I am a musician, per se. I'm a drummer, and my dad swears up and down that I am also an accordion player. When I am having a bad day, I listen to music. I listened to Marcy Playground (one of the bands he played with) and their music helped me get through what I went through. (Sorry, I'm a bit sporadic.) Amazing how some things are intertwined without any rhyme or reason.

Jason, truly, your family, friends, and you, yourself, are a true inspiration. God Bless!

Your touching story really got me thinking ... thinking about my youngest uncle, whose brain got infected as an infant more than 60 years ago in a remote place in southeast Asia. He did have a loving (and unfortunately illiterate) mother, but he was sent back by the cruel school system at the time after a short time in school, even though he just seemed developmentally slower than other kids. Things like this are still happening in different parts of the world. If only we all could learn to be more humane and loving.

Somehow I just feel the facial expression you often have after your illness seems so deep and it just speaks to me in a unspeakable way. To say I feel you look like a philosopher doesn't quite communicate what I feel. Anyhow, big thanks and hugs to you and your family for sharing with us your powerful story!

What courage and faith this family has. Before seeing this film I have to admit I'm not sure I whether I could have powered past such a bleak diagnose given by doctors to help a loved one. I wouldn't have known such a remarkable recovery would be possible. Now I know it's possible, thank you. I sent the link to this film to everyone in my family.

Jason, I know the answer to a burning question: What is better, Hope or Faith? I would like to thank your family for defining that for me in such a beautiful way through your story, and especially to your dad for articulating it so clearly. Say "Hi, Baby Ellie" for me. Keep the Faith.

Watching Jason's story was so inspirational and I was so moved by his families strength and love and never give up attitude. When one talks about heroes I see it in all their faces. I am so glad to have been exposed to this documentary and Jason's music. I love the song The Books on the Shelf and Jason performs with such soul. Thank you for sharing your gift Jason! Ellie has been blessed with such a loving mom and dad.

Stayed up until 3:15 am ... watching the story, cried.. got goosebumps.

I spent 6 years alone in bed following a car accident that was the final assault on my system and brought out full on Chronic fatigue. I was too weak to sit up for more than an hour, but I remained "normal looking". 20 years later, still not able to work for pay, but health is much better. I was very alone during those years. It was incredibly painful on all levels, but I wasn't in a position to be lost forever inside my own self. My brain/vision stuff shifts day to day.

I'm so highly touched by both the amount of work that Jason had to do and the way this family wrapped around him, like an intelligent, nurturing blanket. I told my cab driver today about the story and she was in tears just hearing about it. I am thrilled at the healing.. that both took and I'm sure still takes place. I shudder at the thought of how easily someone could be overwhelmed and walked away or given up.

Love the souls, love the music.

Truly amazing. I am a musician as well and was given some bad news lately about my health at 27. I was very freaked out and still am. But after watching this I feel maybe I could pull through and the doctors can't really put a time frame on how long I have left as they already have. I believe it's in my hands and God's now. My band and I are pretty inspired now to kick it in gear. THANKYOU for sharing your amazing and truely inspiring story. ~Kevin~ Tulsa,Ok
