THE CLASSROOM
P.O.V. documentaries are a valuable resource for teachers and students.
Use this companion lesson plan to present PROMISES to your middle school
and high school class. Note: P.O.V. documentaries can be taped off-the-air
and used for educational purposes for up to one year from the initial broadcast.
The following lesson plans comprise a unit that uses television as a learning
tool in the subject areas of American History, Civics, and Government and
are written for grades 7-12. These classroom activities include: learning
objectives; an outline of the relevant national standards met by the plans;
a list of necessary tools and materials; a notation regarding the total
time needed to complete the individual lessons; a teaching strategy; assessment
recommendations; and extension ideas.
LESSON: Understanding History,
Religion, and Politics in Jerusalem and Beyond

The city of Jerusalem has been the center of controversy for centuries.
Students will engage in research and interactive exercises (including
a role-playing game) to acquire historical knowledge of the conflict between
Israelis and Palestinians in the region, learn how to interpret a conflict
from multiple perspectives, advocate for a point of view, and develop
greater conflict resolution skills. This lesson will also allow teachers
to promote greater tolerance and understanding of 'others.
