POINT OF VIEW

One Day I Had to Run

In 1988 an estimated 17,000 young refugees fled the civil war in Sudan to safety in Ethiopia. When the Marxist Mengistu govenment fell in Ethiopia in 1991, these "lost boys" were forced to flee back to Sudan, crossing the Gilo River and risking violence and starvation. John Deng Langbany, a refugee who was five years old when he left Sudan, tells the story of the journey from Sudan to Ethiopia, and ultimately, to the US. | »
