Dr. Riyadh at Abu Ghraib

Watch this extended video of Dr. Riyadh's visit to evaluate the health of the prisoners at Abu Ghraib prison and the press conference he held in July 2004, three months after the Abu Ghraib photos were made public.

Clip 1: At Abu Ghraib

This scene at Abu Ghraib was filmed only three months after the torture photographs were made public worldwide. It is a major turning point in the film because it is the first time I met Dr. Riyadh.

Dr. Riyadh was leading an inspection of the prison for the Baghdad city council. I introduced myself as an American and asked if I could film him. He said, "Yes, we want transparency." As I filmed Dr. Riyadh speaking with the detainees and then try to explain to the U.S. military that the detention of Iraqis without charge will only create more anti-American sentiment, I knew I'd found the film's protagonist. | Watch Video

Clip 2: Press Conference

Clip 2: Press Conference

The press conference was recorded a couple weeks later. I wasn't able to work it into the film, but I like the scene very much. It shows Dr. Riyadh arguing that a man is innocent until proven guilty — a principle that Americans pride themselves in — and yet the context flips the idea on its head. Here was an Iraqi arguing against the United States' detention of Iraqis without due process and using our legal principles to do it.  | Watch Video

"Iraq is my spirit and my wish is for the Iraqi people to live peacefully and love each other and work together to re-establish this damaged country, setting up a government working for all Iraqis. I know that is a dream but I pray to God for it to be real."

—Dr. Riyadh, October 2006
