1. Work to support local agencies involved in substance-abuse prevention initiatives targeted at young people.

Learn about substance abuse prevention and what every parent needs to know at the website of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Peruse a list of prevention education tools, resources and organizations at the website of the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention.

Find out about community and faith-based alcohol prevention organizations at the website of Stop Underage Drinking.

2. Facilitate a dialogue for unrelated parents and teens to meet, ask questions of one another and improve communication skills.

3. Conduct further research to investigate the importance of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) to the Gwitchin and the potential impact of drilling in ANWR on the lives of the people in Old Crow. Telephone, e-mail or meet with legislators and other policymakers to share what you learned.

The U.S. government's website for the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge provides an overview of the region, guides for visitors and educators and information about the history of the area.

As Stan Sr. points out in "Arctic Son," the U.S. government is considering opening up ANWR to oil exploration. The Natural Resource Defense Council argues against the notion on its website, where you can also tell Congress to oppose Arctic drilling and see a map (PDF) that outlines the destructive effects of drilling.

On the other hand, ANWR.org (Arctic National Wildlife Refuge) supports making part of the refuge an oil reserve. The website for the organization argues that the oil that can be drilled from the refuge will provide jobs and energy for Americans.

4. Hold a teach-in on global warming with special emphasis on the impact of climate change on the cultures of indigenous peoples.

Read more about global warming at the website of the New York Times, which presents a special section on the topic of global warming. In addition to an overview of global warming, the site highlights the latest articles from The New York Times about the topic.

Research the topic further at the website of Time magazine, which has published a number of articles that provide excellent background on global warming. Read more at:
Global Warming Heats Up (March 26, 2006)
51 Things We Can Do to Save the Environment (April 9, 2007)
What Now for our Feverish Planet? (March 29, 2007)

Read an article from the United Nations Chronicle to learn why global warming threatens the traditions of indigenous people around the world.
