As you know, POV films are documentaries with a point of view. In the case of The Reckoning, filmmakers Paco de Onís, Pamela Yates and Peter Kinoy made their film as part of a larger initiative they are involved with that aims to raise public awareness of the International Criminal Court and international justice. At the core of this initiative is IJCentral.org, a social network for international justice designed to be a resource for the movement to bring perpetrators of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide to justice.
They are interested in gauging the impact of The Reckoning on public opinion about the ICC. It would be extremely helpful for the growing ICC movement if you would take 2 minutes to answer a few questions about the ICC and their film.
And after you fill out the survey no matter where you stand on the ICC POV will provide you with information about how you can engage your community with this issue.
Fill out the survey »
This link will pop up a new window.
38 people responded to the survey as of October 13, 2009. Here are the results:
Had you heard of the International Criminal Court (ICC) before watching The Reckoning?
Yes: 52.6%
No: 47.4%
Did you understand what it was?
Yes: 90%
No: 10%
Do you feel that you understand the ICC more after watching The Reckoning?
Yes: 100%
No: 0%
Do you think the ICC is a good idea?
Yes: 100%
No: 0%
If you answered "Yes" to the last question, can you tell us why?
Many viewers wrote in. This particular viewer wrote a response that was typical:
"It is a good idea because it demonstrates that even people in power are not above the law, that justice is a vital part of having true peace and security, and that being a part of global community means to be accountable for your actions."
As you know from watching the film, the United States is not currently a member state of the ICC. Do you think the United States should join the ICC?
Yes: 92.1%
No: 7.9%
If you answered "No" to the last question, why do you think the U.S. should not join the ICC?
Of the viewers who answered this question, the following viewer's response was typical:
"Allowing the US to be attacked in the ICC could have wide-ranging consequences including the destabilization of international political relations."

Talk About This
Tell The Reckoning filmmakers and other POV viewers what you think of the film, the ICC and whether you think the United States should join the court.I'm upset that this documentary that never tells its audience that the U.S. has not ratified the ICC's jurisdiction! This is pseudo-journalism.

what an informative documentary. Opened my eyes wide and started getting involved. The ICC is a MUST HAVE. Don't be wimpy like our US is becoming. We don't stand up to brutality - instead we give our criminals air conditioned prisons with all the privileges of a resort; allow killers to appeal for years; allow our courts to become a joke with disrespect and light or non-existent sentencing. USA has lost its backbone. Please, ICC, KEEP YOURS!!

Bravo to the founding parents of the ICC and to Ocampo et al for their tireless efforts to bring justice to these monsters.

First off, I'd like to say how terribly horrific the effects of corruption of th sinful nature of man is, throughout the world has played a part in the suffering, famine and death of innocent lives.
And it is so apparent that people from all nations have lost their ability to trust anyone that comes into their own domain, on a personal family unit, in a city unit, in a country unit, and a nation unit, in the judicial unit, the religious unit, and in the family personal unit.
Our trust must start with trusting in the Creator whom made us all, and only guided by his LOVE can this world ever accomplish peaceful bliss.
and he has promised us that he will return for those afflicted.
Blessed are the PURE in SPIRIT for they SHALL SEE GOD...
and the Saints cry HOW LONG LORD, HOW LONG
and the enemy says WHERE IS YOUR GOD TO SAVE YOU.
and the ALMIGHTY GOD WILL COME IN MIGHTLEY and destroy the destroyers.
And he will show mercy on those whom show mercy, and he shall forgive those whom forgive...
To have to live in fear because if you report the crime, more criminal activities may take place when the (criminal, powerful, arrogant, leader, or lawyer defending criminals, or diplomats of all nations who all have their pockets full of blood money...leaders whom manipulate the masses with terror, but first so come in promising them peace and security, yet knowing all along they are only interested in their own welfare of comfort and lust of the flesh, rape of the people and their natural resources...and they still keep killing, and everyone covers one for another, and when one is challenged to defend themselves he may get amnesty for telling on the others and the rest are in fear of dropping like a HOUSE OF CARDS.
But oh if they only Feared God, they would do what is right in the eyes of God and not the approval of man...For it is a Fearful thing to fall into the hands of our Mighty God...and the Fear of the LORD is the beginning of Wisdom.
Make the Savior Jesus Christ your LORD today, call out to him, PRAISE him for his love for us...for there is no greater power in Heaven or Earth and his love will sustain us no matter what may come.
I live in the United States....our county is now leading into dictatorship too....the whole government is corrupt, and they are compromising our freedoms away to the enemies of God.
Yes, the LORD our God told us these things would happen...that the Kingdoms of this world will perish, because Man does not honor God or his fellow man.
And the LORD tells us, that IF MY PEOPLE PRAY and HUMBLE themselves and TURN from their wicked ways, I WILL HEAL THEIR LAND.
No international law can stop killing all together....and every country will fight for their own cultures and laws and beliefs...and every heart will still hold on to hatred and revenge and power over one another,
for no one can love one another until they receive the Holy Spirit of the LOVE of Christ in us, that each heart yearns for the manifestation of the Sons of God...
not by Power, nor by strength, but by the Spirit sayeth the LORD.
I pray blessings now in the Name of Jesus Christ over all his children that are being afflicted by the powers of darkness and principalities in high places.
Whether we live or whether we die, we shall live in God's love by choice, and not hate, and a heart hardened with bitter waters.
For OUR love is stronger than death...
Yes, the LORD told us,
Genesis:1:27. So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he HIM: man and female created he them.
But throughout the ages and the fall of man in the Garden of Eden...mankind has not honored God...or their felllowman.
but made their OWN Gods and corrupted this beautiful planet in which we all share.
And so you see, the time has come, and all those whom kill with the sword will die by the sword...and I'm not talking about those poor children whom where brainwashed and tortured to obeying in killing....
we have a choice to Choose Life or Choose death, even in the WORDS we speak.
The children are innocent, and their innocence has been robbed by thieves and murderers.
Remember Jesus, when they came to take him away to be crucified for the sins of the WORLD, that he didn't defend himself...
HE SPOKE NOT.
for he knew if would do not good. because their hearts where evil, and their pride so wicked...
and they would not surrender to the GRACE OF GOD.
yet even so HE loved us so much that he was willing to lay his life down for his friend...and forgive us and took all our sins upon himself.
His love was unconditional...his mercy endureth forever.
He is coming back for his children and all tears will be wiped away, and we will all be together with him...in the Purity of his love that defeats all death...
On the Cross he said. Father forgive them for they know not what they do...
and he told us...I will never leave you nor forsake you.
he also told us to pray for our enemies.and forgive the unforgivable.

(As stated in one of my survey answers)
The ICC is good in locations with some corrupt and/or totalitarian governments (now genocidocracies in Africa or longer-ago military dictatorships in South America), but not when it would inevitably be used for attention-grabbing
anti-Americans to demand Bush and Cheney be prosecuted.

I am inspired by the courageous prosecutors of the International Criminal Court and will work so that the United States joins the court. As Elie Wiesel so eloquently stated upon receiving his Nobel Peace Prize:
“And that is why I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Sometimes we must interfere. When human lives are endangered, when human dignity is in jeopardy, national borders and sensitivities become irrelevant.”

Corruption is corruption. It doesn't matter if it occurs in another country or in our own. I think the reason the US is not currently a member is because we see ourselves as the top dog in the world. Why should we be held accountable? We never do any wrong. Do we?

I am shocked that we The Great United States is not a member of the ICC. We are the supposed leaders of the World and here we find that we have yet to join the ICC. Why?.

Wow. This was such a powerful film. I think the ICC is exactly what this world needs, and I'm grateful to Ocampo and everyone else who keeps the ICC running. I'm more than ashamed that the U.S. seems to want nothing to do with such an important international organization. Perhaps with our new president, this can change.
What I would love to see happen now is a series of smaller courts created to do the same thing the ICC does, only on a lesser level, to deal with the other ninety percent of the cases the organization is made aware of but cannot focus on for jurisdictional reasons or because they are not in the ICC's constitution. As globalization continues, perhaps that is the next step...
