POV Regarding War

Carla Lois

When Carla Lois’s youngest son, Noah, deployed to Iraq in January 2005, she began a blog, Some Soldier's Mom to write about what it was like to have a child at war. In 2005, 2006 and 2007, her blog was voted the "Military Blog of the Year — Military Parent."

In 2006, Carla's written account of the August 2005 night when the Army called to tell her that her son had been wounded in Iraq was included in The Blog of War, a book of blog postings by frontline American soldiers from Afghanistan and Iraq, edited by Matt Burden (a/k/a Blackfive). Another one of Carla’s stories — part of the 2005 letter she wrote to her son the night before he deployed to Iraq — was selected to lead off the "Home Front" chapter in the 2006 book Operation Homecoming: Iraq, Afghanistan & The Home Front, edited by Andrew Carroll. The book was the result of a National Endowment for the Arts initiative that encouraged U.S. service men and women — and their families — to share their personal and candid wartime experiences.

Carla’s son was medically discharged from the U.S. Army in 2007, but she continues to blog on military family and veterans’ issues. She has appeared on a number of news programs and in publications (both print and online) to address issues affecting military families. She is a retired corporate and transactional legal assistant, and is married to a retired Navy officer. In addition to her Army veteran son, she is the mother of a Navy veteran, and stepmother to a currently serving career Navy sailor and a newly graduated physician.

In addition to blogging at Some Soldier’s Mom, Carla is a contributor to Mudville Gazette/Milblogs, and Parents’ Zone , a group blog by military parents for military parents.
