On the Regarding War blog, soldiers, veterans, and journalists will share their stories from Afghanistan, Iraq and other war zones. It will feature personal stories and opinions from those who have first-hand knowledge of past and current conflicts. Those at home directly affected by a family member serving in the military will also contribute. The blog is meant to be a place where ideas are exchanged and experiences are related in an effort to gain a better understanding of the realities and effects of war. Share your thoughts, raise a question, and join the conversation by leaving comments on the posts.
As a combat engineer in the 82nd Airborne, Lewis Manalo deployed to Afghanistan in 2002 and 2003. Lewis is currently a freelance writer and the book buyer for Idlewild Books in New York City. He is a regular contributor to the international online publishing newsletter Publishing Perspectives and to the film blog Split Edit, and he will be contributing to the Regarding War blog in the coming months. As means of an introduction, we asked Lewis a handful of questions about his military service and writing.
Where are you from?
I was born and raised in Maryland. I currently live in New York City.
Where did you serve and for how long?
I served as a combat engineer in the 82nd Airborne. I deployed to Afghanistan in 2002 for OEF 2 and again in 2003 with replacement troops for OEF 3. I received an honorable discharge in 2004.
When and why did you start blogging?
I was invited to blog for Regarding War after a piece I wrote on Sebastian Junger's book War for Publishing Perspectives. Hopefully, writing about my experiences may help readers form a better understanding of contemporary war.
What are you doing now?
In addition to freelance writing, I currently work as a book buyer for an independent bookshop.
