Ghana: Process of Entering Slavery (Clip 1 of 2)

The first clip associated with the Traces of the Trade lesson plan shows filmmaker Katrina Browne and some members of her family — descendants of slave traders — traveling to Ghana to visit a place where captured Africans were brought and held before being sold as slaves. Students should discuss whether or not the descendants of those who benefited from slavery need to help repair the injustices and inequality that resulted from slavery.

For another perspective on the trip to Ghana, read through Chapter 9 of Inheriting the Trade, Tom DeWolf's powerful and disarmingly honest memoir of the journey.
