The Yangtze in Black and White

Three Gorges Dam Overview, San Dou Ping, 2001, composite

In 2001, the Yangtze flowed through this diversion channel from left to right while the dam was being built. Two “coffer” dams--concrete dikes on the west and east of the central structure--protected the machinery and men during the construction phase. In 2003 this diversion channel was blocked so that the concrete edifice crossing the river could be completed. When finished in 2009, the dam will be 607 feet high and extend 1.45 miles across the river.
