- Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center Artists Perform Schoenberg's Verklarte Nacht -
Rob Kapilow, creator and host of Lincoln Center's "What Makes It Great?" series, provides lively commentary on the origins and place in music history of Arnold Schoenberg's Verklarte Nacht in LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER "I Can't Believe It's Schoenberg!," airing Thursday, January 10, 2008, 8:00-9:00 p.m. ET on PBS. The special guest performers, members of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, are violinists Erin Keefe and Arnaud Sussmann, violists David Kim and Teng Li and cellists David Finckel and Priscilla Lee.
During the first half of the program, Kapilow will work onstage with the musicians to showcase important elements of the piece so that the audience will have a greater understanding of it during the complete performance in the second half of the telecast. "I Can't Believe It's Schoenberg!" will focus on the origins of Verklarte Nacht as a poem by Richard Dehmel, the programmatic aspects of the music as it follows the poem and Kapilow's presentation of the piece as perhaps the last great Romantic composition before 20th-century composition techniques took hold. The broadcast will incorporate Romantic and Expressionist art to help Kapilow guide the audience through the piece.
Kapilow has brought the joy and wonder of classical music to audiences of all ages for more than a decade. His work brings music into people's lives by opening new ears to musical experiences and helping people to listen actively rather than just hear. Kapilow's range of activities includes his "What Makes It Great?" presentations (now in their 11th seasons in New York and Boston), his family compositions and FamilyMusik events and his Citypieces. Kapilow's popularity and appeal are reflected in an appearance on NBC's "Today" with Katie Couric, who called him "a wonderful guy who brings music alive!" His upcoming book will be published during the 2008-09 season through the alliance between John Wiley & Sons, Inc., and Lincoln Center.
