and students attend memory school |

Quick!
Who was your second grade teacher? What did you have for breakfast?
Can't remember? You're probably not alone.
Meet Frank Felberbaum,
a memory consultant. He's devised methods that boost the memory
to astonishing new heights. In "Memory Marathon," Alan Alda
takes a seat in the first of Felberbaum's training sessions
with a group of New Jersey high school students. Over the course
of one afternoon, everyone's recall - including Alan's - improves
dramatically.
Then it's off to the year 2000 Memoriad, the national memory
championship contest held each year in New York City. Felberbaum's
team squares off against the nation's best, including Tatiana
Cooley, the 29 year-old two-time champion. The hardest part
comes at the end, when contestants must recall each card in
order from a well-shuffled deck. Here, even the former champion
falters...

How
well did Felberbaum's students do? Amazingly well - they took
second and third. But they couldn't catch the formidable Tatiana,
who claimed the championship for the third year in a row.
