ANSWERS

PART ONE - SATURATED & UNSATURATED FATS
QUESTIONS

  1. How many bonds does each carbon atom form? (four)
  2. How many bonds does each hydrogen atom form? (one)
  3. How does the structure of saturated fat differ from the unsaturated fat? (saturated fat has only single bonds, unsaturated fat includes double bonds)
  4. Why do you think that the terms saturated and unsaturated are applied to these molecular backbones? (In the saturated molecule, all of the bonds are used up by attaching to different atoms. The bonding opportunities are "saturated" with different atoms. In the unsaturated version, the double bonds that can be replaced by a single bond, thereby making available more sites for new atoms. These multiple bonds are not fully "saturated" with their potential for bonding)
