Alexander
H Slocum is Professor of Mechancial Engineering
and MacVicar Faculty Fellow at MIT. His
research projects range from consumer products
(e.g. cameras and printers) to the machines
that make them (e.g., diamond turning machines
and wafer steppers). His main area of interest
is precision engineering - the ability to
precisely control motion - which is critical
to the success of any manufacturing based
economy. He teaches courses 2.007 Introduction
2 Design and 2.75 Precision Machine Design.
Among
the numerous awards and prizes Slocum has
received are 9 R&D 100 Awards for scientific
product developments, SME's Frederick W.
Taylor Research Medal, the Martin Luther
King Leadership Award, and he was the Massachusetts
Professor of the Year (2000). Alex has over
5 dozen patents with more on the way. He
is also a member of the American Society
for Precision Engineering, the American
Society of Mechanical Engineers and the
Society of Manufacturing Engineers.
