Amy
Age: 66   Age: 30
Start weight: 196 Start weight: 320
Method: Online Weight watchers Method: Gastric bypass surgery
Alan joined in the weight-loss challenge because he wanted to lose a few pounds and he thought it would be a good way to learn first-hand what the subjects might encounter while attempting to lose weight. I had an appointment with my primary care physician who was treating me for high blood pressure and aches and pains. He recommended I have gastric bypass surgery. At first I was angry, but after I spoke with my family I decided I wanted it done the next day.

John
Age: 32
  Age: 41
Start weight: 320 Start weight: 250+
Method: Calorie counting Method: Atkins diet

I was thinking that failure in front of a national audience would be an intimidating, yet hugely motivating factor.

My wife and I were expecting a child soon and I wanted to lose the weight to be able to keep up with a newborn and be healthy enough to see my child grow into an adult.

As I was pondering a weight loss program I began to hear about the Atkins approach to weight loss and picked up one of his books and decided it was a good fit. As I was doing this research I read about the FRONTIERS program and decided that would be fun and sort of a motivator to stay with the diet, so away we went.

Kathy

Marcy
Age: 46   Age: 48
Start weight: 164 Start weight: 194
Method: eDiets online Method: Weight Watchers
I joined the show hoping that it would motivate me to stay on the diet. I also thought it would be fun to participate in this experiment. I was interested to find out which of the many diets works better. I joined the show because--it seemed like great fun and a good source of motivation. Maybe it will give those without a weight problem some insight into our struggles and maybe lead them to have a little more compassion about the whole issue, particularly in the case of overweight children.

Robin

Rodney
Age: 47   Age: 59
Start weight: 247 Start weight: 346
Method: Zone diet Method: Gastric bypass surgery
I joined because the Zone is a diet I've been wanting to try and I thought the program would help me keep on track. In addition, I wanted to play softball again. I hadn't played in a couple of years, and I didn't want to play at the weight I was, so there was real incentive to meet my goal by putting that "carrot" out there. I thought that I was getting old and that's why I always had back aches and my knees and legs would hurt all the time but I found out it was the weight that I was carrying around.

Tom

Wendy
Age: 46   Age: 31
Start weight: 207 Start weight: 190
Method: eDiets online Method: Mediterranean Diet
I joined the show to keep myself on an exercise program, to build good nutrition habits and because Kathy wanted to do the show. There is no way I would have joined the show alone. I joined the show initially to give an extra push to my weight loss. I believed I was ready to go the extra mile needed for follow through.
