Losing It

Counting Down

Photo of Robin Douglas

Robin lost 45 pounds using the Zone diet.

All but one of our 10 participants stayed with us throughout filming. At a dinner eight months after the start of the weight-loss challenge, our volunteers share some of what they learned about the highs and lows of losing weight. Though not everyone achieved their specific weight-loss objectives, each has reached personal goals:

Four months after surgery, Amy took her first shopping trip to a regular-size clothing store.

Eric gave up a two-liter-a-day soda habit.

Tom and Kathy say they've learned better eating habits that they hope they've passed on to their kids.

Marcy joined a gym and found that she actually enjoys exercising.

Robin slimmed down enough to join a softball team.

Tom lost 12 pounds using e-Diets.

Rodney says he's more honest with himself about his eating and just generally more open with other people.

Wendy addressed her lifelong binge-eating problem.

Alan brought his blood pressure down and was able to go off his blood-pressure medication.

If they are like most people, our "successful" dieters will have quite a struggle keeping it off. It won't be impossible, but it will be tough.

Our two gastric bypass patients are still losing weight and, given their program's success rate, neither would expect to regain weight within five years.
