Mieke
Verfaellie is Professor of Psychiatry and Psychology
at Boston University and is a Research Career Scientist
at the Boston Department of Veterans Affairs Healthcare
System. She received her Ph.D. in psychology from the
University of Louvain, Belgium in 1986.
Verfaellie
serves as the Director of the Memory Disorders Research
Center, a multidisciplinary center dedicated to the
study of memory disorders in brain-injured adults. Her
research is aimed at understanding the cognitive and
neural basis of different forms of memory. Verfaellie
is interested in understanding why some forms of memory
are impaired in patients with amnesia and why some forms
of memory remain preserved and hopes to find ways in
which preserved memory functions can be used in the
service of memory rehabilitation. To gain further knowledge
about the regions of the brain that subserve memory,
her laboratory has begun to use functional neuroimaging
techniques that allow visualization of brain activity
during performance of memory tasks.
