SEA
ICE is any ice made of frozen seawater.
FAST
ICE is sea ice that holds fast to the coast or another stationary
object. It can be categorized by age depending on how long
it exists e.g. first-year, multi-year and so on. The older
it is, the thicker it is.
FLOES
are chunks of floating sea ice and can range from a few meters
to more than 10 kilometers across.
LEADS
are passageways of open water within the sea ice. These are
important access points for marine mammals; whales use them
to breathe and land-based mammals use them to enter the water
for hunting or escape. Leads are navigable by boats.
POLYNYAS
are irregularly shaped openings in the ice, not linear breaks
like leads.
PACK
ICE is basically any ice that isn't hooked onto anything stationary
(i.e. not fast ice). It can be very open with floes scattered
across the ocean surface at wide distances, or it can be very
close, with vast expanses covered by ice.
ICEBERGS
are NOT sea ice. They are actually pieces of freshwater ice
that break off glaciers or ice shelves.
