Helen Neville was born and raised in Vancouver, Canada. After completing her undergraduate degree at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver) and a Masters degree at Simon Fraser U. (Vancouver), she travelled to England to conduct research at the University of Sussex. She subsequently earned her Ph.D. at Cornell University in 1975 and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Neuroscience at the University of California, San Diego.

Since 1995, Dr. Neville has been the Director of the Brain Development Lab and a Professor of psychology and neuroscience at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon. Prior to this, she was Director of the Lab for Neuropsychology at Salk Institute for Biological Studies in San Diego (1978-1995) and Professor of cognitive science and neuroscience at the University of California, San Diego until 1995.
