Lisa Harris, M.D., Primary Care Physician, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics Diagnosed with Metabolic Syndrome
Dr. Harris is in private practice and has been diagnosed with metabolic syndrome. She made changes in diet and exercise to treat the condition and currently has the syndrome and diabetes, under control.
Lisa Harris, M.D. was born in Oneida, New York, the eldest child and only daughter of the honorable Judge Roy and Mrs. Lucille King. Dr. Harris attended Monroe Jr. Sr. High School and then furthered her education at the University of Rochester, where she received a B.S. in neurosciences. Later, she attended Morehouse School of Medicine where she received her medical degree. Her training was completed at the Detroit Medical Center in Detroit, MI. Dr. Harris is boarded in two specialties, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, allowing her to care for both the adult and pediatric populations. Currently, Dr. Harris is in private practice.
Mickey Burt, D.C. Chiropractor Palmer College of Chiropractic, Davenport, Iowa, Burt Clinic of Chiropractic, Walcott, Iowa
Mickey Burt, D.C., is Chief of Alumni Development for Palmer College of Chiropractic, Davenport, Iowa, and president and founder of Burt Clinic of Chiropractic in Walcott, Iowa. He earned his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Palmer College in 1973, and also received Palmer's Clinical Excellence Award. He opened Burt Clinic of Chiropractic in 1974 and taught in Palmer College's Clinical Science Department from 1973 to 1976. Two of his sons have joined him in practice. Dr. Burt has seen his practice grow from the very first patient to a busy, three-doctor clinic, and expand from a small office to an 8,200-square-foot facility including a radiology and physiotherapy suite as well as a wing housing offices for primary care medical doctors. He was appointed Palmer's Chief of Alumni Development in June 2005. In support of his alma mater, he serves as co-chair for the Palmer College capital campaign, which has raised more than $28 million dollars in four years. He is active in his profession, and is the first chiropractor to sit on the quality oversight committee for Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Iowa. Dr. Burt also has served as a state representative for the International Chiropractors Association, as well as a district president, district director and vision steering committee member for his state associations. He also is a member of the American Chiropractic Association. His community involvement includes chairing the Walcott Economic Development Committee, and serving as a city councilman and mayor pro-tem. He and his wife, Karla, have three sons: Dr. Chad Burt, Dr. Bradley Burt and Austin Burt.
Robert Medcalf, PT, Dip MDT
Robert is an honors graduate of the Georgia State University Physical Therapy program. After advanced studies in New Zealand with the McKenzie Institute International in 1991, he was granted the McKenzie Institute International Diploma in Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy of the Spine. He was subsequently named to the teaching faculty of the McKenzie Institute. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the McKenzie Institute USA and the Advisory Council for the McKenzie Institute International. He has presented at several scientific conferences on low back and neck pain issues and has taught numerous post-graduate courses to physical therapists and physicians in the US and internationally on the assessment and conservative management of spinal pain. He has also participated in award-winning published research on the diagnostic accuracy of the McKenzie assessment process. Robert resides in Atlanta, Georgia where he is the Director of Spinal Rehabilitation for Resurgens Orthopaedics in Atlanta, GA, USA.
Dr. Paul T. Rubery, MD
Dr. Paul T. Rubery is an Associate Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and Pediatrics at The University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in Rochester, NY. Dr. Rubery, 43, is a graduate of The Johns Hopkins University, and The Cornell University Medical College. He was a resident in Orthopaedic Surgery at The Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, and completed fellowship training in spinal surgery at The University of Rochester. Dr. Rubery currently heads the StrongHealth Spine Center (585-275-BACK) a multi-disciplinary clinical service of the University of Rochester where almost 25,000 patients with spine disorders are seen each year. In addition to his surgical practice, Dr. Rubery has been active in research focusing on applications of gene therapy in Orthopaedics.
Rev. Susan Shafer
The Reverend Susan S. Shafer is the Pastor of a large metropolitan church, Asbury First United Methodist Church, in Rochester New York. She earned her Bachelor of Science Degree from Ohio Wesleyan University and earned her Masters of Divinity Degree with Honors from Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity Schools in 1982; She was ordained an Elder in the United Methodist Church in June of 1983. She has served Asbury First UMC church for twenty five years specifically involved with the Caring Evangelism and Preaching Ministries of the Church. She is an Adjunct Professor at Roberts Wesleyan College and an Adjunct Professor at Northeastern Seminary teaching in the areas of Pastoral Care and Church leadership. She has extensive experience in hospital ministry as well as extensive training and experience in grief ministries. Rev. Shafer is the wife of Dr. John Shafer and mother of three grown children who have given her six wonderful grandchildren! She lives and works with a deep calling and enthusiastic response.
Elissa Orlando Civilian Guest
Elissa L. Orlando is a 20-year veteran of public affairs programming and multimedia storytelling. Orlando is director of national programming and special projects at WXXI Public Broadcasting. She was producer of the nationally televised Crucible of Freedom companion program to Ken Burns Not for Ourselves Alone. Orlando has won several New York State broadcasting awards for television news reporting in Somalia Africa, Homestead Florida and other local and national venues. She is a recipient of the Gracie award for television programming from American Women in Radio and Television, and she is the recipient of a Telly award for her production of the TV documentary Reclaiming the Crescent. Orlando also received the Woman of the Distinction award from the Jefferson County Women's Conference in 1995. She was formerly TV news and public affairs director at WXXI, where she also served as executive producer, Website editor and news anchor of Need to Know, WXXI's Emmy Award-winning newsmagazine.
