Founded at Northwestern University as a not-for-profit organization in 1933, the Academy has grown from a small organization serving fewer than 500 members to the world's largest medical association of musculoskeletal specialists. The Academy now serves about 24,000 members internationally. |

The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health, supports research into the causes, treatment, and prevention of arthritis and musculoskeletal and skin diseases. NIAMS also helps in the training of basic and clinical scientists to carry out this research, and in the dissemination of information on research progress in these diseases. |

Founded in 1968, the Hip Society was formed for the advancement of knowledge relating to the hip joint both in health and in distress.
