Sue Willer Registered Nurse Osteoporosis Patient
Sue Willer has been a Registered Nurse since 1976. She has worked with senior citizens since 1992 and currently works for Strong Health at the Highlands at Pittsford, in Rochester, New York, as the Nurse Coordinator for independent living apartments and cottage homes. Since being diagnosed with osteoporosis her life has changed in several ways: she is more aware of keeping calcium-rich foods in her diet since she is not a milk drinker (she eats yogurt and cottage cheese, and of course, now that OJ is fortified with calcium, that is a huge help to her 2.) she is aware of her risk for fractures from a fall and is more aware of her surroundings (i.e.: uneven pavement, etc.) 3.) she wears only "sensible shoes", no high heels, only flat or wedge shoes!! 4.) she is more aware of the power of daily walking and weight bearing exercise to keep her strong and fit, and has recently started a "balance ball " exercise program for overall conditioning.
Lisa Y. Harris, M.D. Primary Care Physician, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics Private Practice, Rochester, NY
Lisa Harris, M.D. was born in Oneida, New York, the eldest child and only daughter of the honorable Judge Roy and Mrs. Lucille King. Dr. Harris attended Monroe Jr. Sr. High School and then furthered her education at the University of Rochester, where she received a B.S. in neurosciences. Later, she attended Morehouse School of Medicine where she received her medical degree. Her training was completed at the Detroit Medical Center in Detroit, MI. Dr. Harris is boarded in two specialties, Internal Medicine and Pediatrics, allowing her to care for both the adult and pediatric populations. Currently, Dr. Harris is in private practice in Downtown Rochester, NY. In addition to a busy medical practice, Dr. Harris is a licensed evangelist in the Church of God in Christ, a Sunday school teacher, youth group leader, President of the Young Women's Christian council at her local church. She is a member of Jack and Jill of Rochester, Inc., Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., The American College of Physicians, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Physician Executives and serves on numerous boards in her community.
Susan Bukata, M.D. Director, Osteoporosis Center University of Rochester
Susan V. Bukata, M.D., is assistant professor of orthopaedics at the University of Rochester Medical Center, and director of the Medical Center's Osteoporosis and Metabolic Bone Disease Center. A talented clinician and researcher, Dr. Bukata has worked with the some of the world's leading orthopaedic and osteoporosis researchers on the healing mechanisms of bone, and how drug therapies may be able to boost bone development while decreasing healing time. Dr. Bukata recently came to the Medical Center from the prestigious Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and Hospital for Special Surgery, where she completed a fellowship in orthopaedic oncology and metabolic bone disease. Prior to that, she was a resident at the University of Rochester, working in orthopaedics, orthopaedic research and general surgery. Dr. Bukata received her medical degree from Columbia University in 1995, and received her bachelor's degree from Harvard University in 1991.
Amity Hall Exercise Specialist FlowFitness Inc.
Amity Hall is an exercise science specialist, who began her work at Mt. Sinai hospital in Manhattan working to increase strength, mobility and independent function in a geriatric population. Since then, she and business partner, Marc Grabisch, began a fitness company "Flow Fitness", that specializes in encouraging strength gain and exercise in the 50+ population. The company has set up training programs in various fitness facilities in the NY metro area, Long Island, and Rochester, NY, demonstrating how a sedentary population can be motivated to become active and physically fit. They are the current facility managers of "The Center For Lifetime Wellness", a fitness center in Rochester, NY designed to cater to an older adult population. "Flow Fitness" also specializes in race production, and has organized different venues such as an annual "Fit at Fifty " sprint Triathlon, and 5k road races. Amity's goal is to encourage people no matter of age or fitness background, to stay healthy, strong, functionally independent, and thus for them to realize how this will mentally and physically transform their lives. Amity's own athletic background includes; division I All-American swimmer at The University of California at Berkeley, Olympic trials qualifier, and currently competes as an elite Triathlete around the country.
Kevin R. McCormick, M.D., Ph.D. Medical Director of the Geriatrics & Medicine Associates University of Rochester
Kevin McCormick M.D., Ph.D. is a faculty member at the University of Rochester School of Medicine. He is the Medical Director of the Geriatrics & Medicine Associates, which provides primary care services for seniors in the greater Rochester area, through Highland Hospital. Dr. McCormick is responsible for medical education involving medical students, residents, and fellows seeking advanced training in Geriatrics. He created the "Care of the Older Patient" course, now required for all interns in the Department of Medicine. While his original field of research was immune function and aging, he is currently involved in projects related to depression in the elderly, doctor-patient communication, and medical education. Dr. McCormick did his undergraduate studies at Cornell University and his graduate work at the Medical College of Virginia where he received an M.S. in gerontology and a Ph.D. for his work on immunosenescence, before completing his medical training.
Elissa Orlando Civilian Guest
Elissa L. Orlando is a 20-year veteran of public affairs programming and multimedia storytelling. Orlando is director of national programming and special projects at WXXI Public Broadcasting. She was producer of the nationally televised Crucible of Freedom companion program to Ken Burns Not for Ourselves Alone. Orlando has won several New York State broadcasting awards for television news reporting in Somalia Africa, Homestead Florida and other local and national venues. She is a recipient of the Gracie award for television programming from American Women in Radio and Television, and she is the recipient of a Telly award for her production of the TV documentary Reclaiming the Crescent. Orlando also received the Woman of the Distinction award from the Jefferson County Women's Conference in 1995. She was formerly TV news and public affairs director at WXXI, where she also served as executive producer, Website editor and news anchor of Need to Know, WXXI's Emmy Award-winning newsmagazine.
