With England's economy in a slump and disillusionment with Elizabeth's rule spreading, the collapse of the wool trade is still impacting on the Shakespeares. Perhaps due to his precarious financial status, or perhaps because he no longer has the stomach for public office under the State's relentless suppression of Catholic faith, John Shakespeare begins to miss council meetings.
