Hampton Court Palace clockOriginally built by Thomas Wolsey, Henry VIII, Elizabeth's father, took possession of the building in 1528 when Wolsey failed to gain the king a divorce. Henry set about systematically rebuilding and extending Hampton Court. No drawings or plans of the original design have survived, leaving the Palace as something of an architectural mystery.
