Smoky Hills Public Television earned a number of prestigious awards in 2007.

For only the second time in its 50-plus year history, the Kansas Association of Broadcasters (KAB) awarded a Station of the Year designation to Smoky Hills Public Television. Smoky Hills Public Television also won the 2007 Governor’s Award for Exemplary Service to Children.

In addition, Smoky Hills Public Television was one of only 23 of the 178 public television licensees nationwide honored by the National Educational Telecommunications Association (NETA).

STATION OF THE YEAR
Smoky Hills’ KAB Station of the Year honor is the result of multiple category
awards – first place in four categories, second place in two categories and one third place.
The station was recognized in the non-metro division as follows:

Sportscast – First Place, “The Scoreboard Show,” Michael Quade, producer, and a
crew of staff and volunteers.

Single Topic News – First Place, “Kansas Spotlight: Alternative Strings,” Bryan
Dennett, producer;

In-Depth News – First Place, “Kansas Spotlight: Eric Abraham,” Bryan Dennett,
producer;

Station Promotion Campaign – First Place, “Autumn Art Auction”, Bryan
Dennett, producer;

In-Depth News – Second Place, “Kansas Spotlight: Heartland Farm”, Rodrigo
Lopez, producer;

Station Promotion Announcement – Second Place, “Miss Southwest Kansas
Pageant,” Bryan Dennett, producer; and

Station Promotion Announcement – Third Place, “KSHSAA 3-2-1A Wrestling
State Championships,” Michael Quade, producer.
Smoky Hills Public Television received its first
KAB Station of the Year award in 2003.

GOVERNOR’S AWARD

The Governor’s Award for Exemplary Service to Children and Families, presented at
the 31st Annual Governor’s Conference for the Prevention of Child Abuse and
Neglect, was awarded jointly to Smoky Hills and KTWU, Topeka, and KPTS, Wichita.
The three public television stations together were nominated by Sally Paige Kahle,
with the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services (SRS), for their valuable children-based television programming and community-based activities to enhance children’s learning and development.

NATIONAL HONOR
Smoky Hills’ earned NETA’s first place award in its Promotion:
Corporate/Institutional – Small Market category for its “State of the Station” on-air campaign designed to report to its viewers on the health of the station and its services.
