“Two Unknown Women.” These two ladies of unknown tribal affiliation are greeting each other in the traditional hongi style. What makes this photo most interesting is that both women have tattoos on their arms (retouched by photographer). The words are Wiremu and Rangitoia, presumably their baptismal names. This type of tattooing is thought to have originated with the missionaries—permanently marking their early converts. Original albumen photograph mounted on board, Pulman Photo #185. Circa 1880s. Collection of Mark and Carolyn Blackburn.
