Two Arawa Ladies in Maori meeting house.

Back
“Two Arawa Ladies in Maori meeting house.” This lovely hand-colored photo was taken inside the Rangitihi meeting house. The house was carved in 1860 and stood at Maketu until 1897. This romantic and suggestive photo was published for the “tourist market” that was just beginning to fully emerge. These two unidentified ladies have traditional lip and chin moko, heightening their exotic appeal to the tourist market. Original mounted photo inscribed “Two Maori Belles” in white ink, photographer unknown. Collection of Mark and Carolyn Blackburn.
