 | | GIOVANNI DOMENICO CASSINI |
| Genoa, Italy (1625 - 1712) | Giovanni Domenico Cassini was an Italian mathematician, astronomer, engineer, and astrologer. Cassini was an astronomer at the Panzano Observatory, from 1648 to 1669, professor of astronomy at the University of Bologna and became, in 1671, director of the Paris Observatory. Along with Robert Hooke, Cassini is given credit for the discovery of the Great Red Spot on Jupiter (ca. 1665). Cassini was the first to observe four of Saturn's moons, which he called Sidera Lodoicea. Around 1690, Cassini was the first to observe differential rotation within Jupiter's atmosphere. | | |

Studying galaxy formation in the infrared with ALMA

In addition to looking at nearby regions or star formations also to study the composition of these clouds which will contain complicated molecules which are probably the first elements to build life, ALMA will also be capable of doing very important discoveries in the very far away universe.

In addition to looking at nearby regions or star formations also to study the composition of these clouds which will contain complicated molecules which are probably the first elements to build life, ALMA will also be capable of doing very important discoveries in the very far away universe. The reason is that galaxies emit in fact most of the light at wavelengths in the infrared. As the universe is expanding, when we look at faraway galaxies, the light they are emitting is pushed more and more towards the red, but the wavelength range of ALMA is such that for this reason and given the shape of the spectrum of the galaxies, galaxies very far away look to ALMA as bright as galaxies very close by.
