Algebra for Grades 9-12
Why the Algebra Standard for Grades 9-12?
Instructional programs from PreK through grade 12 should enable all students to:
Understand patterns, relations and functions
Represent and analyze mathematical situations and structures using algebraic symbols
Use mathematical models to represent and understand quantitative relationships
Analyze change in various contexts

Algebra from the Experts
At the 9-12 Institute, presenter John Carter gives advice about initiating change in your classroom, directing students who have never been asked to communicate mathematically, and analyzing the way we teach Algebra. Watch the following video clips to hear John's ideas.

The Connection Standard
According to the Principles and Standards of School Mathematics (p. 354),
"When students can see the connections across content areas, they develop a view of mathematics as an integrated whole."
The activities in the Virtual Math Academy are examples of how to help students develop an understanding of the four Algebra components, however, each section emphasizes one component. As you explore these activities keep in mind how mathematical ideas interconnect and build on one another to produce a coherent whole.
