How to Use the VMA

As a self-directed online resource for all grade levels, the Virtual Mathematics Academy (VMA) allows you to investigate and apply the NCTM's Principles and Standards for School Mathematics, explore exemplary mathematics practices, and refine your own teaching practices — on your own time, at your own pace.

An Integrated Approach
An integrated approach to learning is recommended as you use the resources available at PBS TeacherLine. You will learn online and begin to use the activities and ideas to improve your classroom instruction. Hence, your learning is "integrated." Ideas developed while working through the materials online can be incorporated into practice. Activities presented in the VMA give you opportunity to consider their implications for your classroom.

Learn by Doing
Research shows that learner centered practices can be effective for a variety of learners. The activities in the Virtual Mathematics Academy were developed using a learner-centered instructional model. While a tremendous amount of information can be presented through lecture and text, learning only occurs when the student reflects on material and processes it. Activities in the VMA are designed to be interactive and allow you to think about the ideas presented.

Register
If you haven't already done so, you will need to become a registered TeacherLine user to use the VMA. It's free and easy to join.

Set Your Own Pace
Don't try to do everything at once. Take small steps. Try one area for change this week. If what you try is not effective, what else could you try? If it is effective, adopt it as part of your practice, and focus on another area for change the following week. This week, consider Equity: do you call on girls as often as boys? Next week, think about asking effective questions: do you allow enough time for students to think about an answer and let them respond, or do you consistently give them the answers?
