VMA Overview

Structure

Principles

  • There are six NCTM Principles: Equity, Curriculum, Teaching, Learning, Assessment, and Technology.

  • Within each principle, there are five steps: Define, Explore, Plan, Implement, and Reflect.

  • The Explore section of each principle is divided into grade bands: PreK-2, 3-5, 6-8, or 9-12.

Algebra

  • Enter the Algebra area by choosing a grade band: PreK-2, 3-5, 6-8, or 9-12.

  • Within each grade band, the material is divided into four concepts in Algebra: Patterns, Relations, and Functions; Representations; Modeling; Analyzing Change.

  • Within each concept, you will find three steps: Define, Explore, and Reflect.

Steps
  • Define - A general overview of the NCTM Principle or Algebra concept.

  • Explore - An in-depth exploration of a Principle or Algebra concept through a variety of activities.

  • Plan - This step helps you to develop a strategy to begin the change process in your classroom.

  • Implement - This step gets you started on making change in your classroom.

  • Reflect - Although there are reflection questions throughout the VMA, the Reflect step allows you to think about a Principle or Algebra concept as a whole and express what you have learned or how your views have changed.

Plan of Action
Once you've gone through a component of the VMA, you can develop a Plan of Action, which gives you a way to implement what you've learned in your classroom. As you go through the VMA, remember to think about how you will incorporate what you're learning in your Plan of Action.

Discussion Board
As you go through the VMA, you may want to discuss what you've learned with other mathematics educators. Use the TeacherLine Community Discussion Board to share ideas and questions with other teachers.
