How will the iPad change education?

ipad JobsImagine for just a second, how the publisher/textbook industry would change if every student in a classroom had a tablet. Textbooks would no longer be printed on paper (the environment thanks you), and the publishers could then charge a “rental” fee or subscription. The information could be immediately updated unlike the current format of a textbook that in some instances is obsolete before it is in the hands of the user. When the rental time expires, there is nothing to throw away or take up space. Imagine the learning that can occur when students and teachers are connected in a way that desktops and even laptops cannot provide in the digital (or should we call it mobile) age.

This blog excerpt was written by Rob Reynolds on the topic of 21st Century Learning;

Tablets will change education this year and in the future because they align neatly with the goals and purposes of education in a digital age. Specifically, these devices will succeed because:

  • They are about productivity — Learning is about doing and, increasingly, about doing both in and out of the traditional classroom. In the 21st century, learning is contextual and promotes engaging students in real-life applications. This means learning on-the-go but with all of the necessary materials and digital tools necessary for their tasks. A phone isn’t quite up to the task and a laptop isn’t exactly mobile. A tablet is the perfect device.
  • They are about convergence — E-readers will not take hold in education because tablets will negate their usefulness and appeal. An e-reader is a single-use machine and a fairly limited one at that. The tablet, on the other hand, will support e-textbooks — Web-based and offline — color, Web productivity, and a whole host of other media, content creation, and communication options. The tablet can serve many functions and the e-reader only one. We want convergence when it makes sense and the convergence offered by tablet devices will appeal to educational users.
  • They are about mobility — Make no mistake about it — tablets are mobile devices. They will run mobile apps, have mobile contracts in some cases, and be designed for productivity on-the-move. They are perfect for augmented reality applications, distributed learning, and student success tools.
  • They are about price and availability — Tablets will allow users to have the functionality they want at a price they can afford. More importantly, they will usher in a new era of learning material distribution and subscription models for textbooks. The net result will be lower education costs across the board.
  • They are about community — Tablets are mobile devices that connect users to one another. Learning, particularly in the 21st century, is a community-based activity. Enough said.”

This is a very exciting time for the world of educational technology.

Ya I just bought an app called My LessonPlan so i can do all of my lesson plans right from my iPad. My students also think its neat to see me use my iPad in the classroom!
  • I think so. With the new technology introduced into education, we are walking into a new era of education. That is a very good news. I think this will be realized in no time.
  • White_Wolf100
I disagree with the ipad in the classroom. Not in every situation will a person have an ipad or simialr device to do their work. they have to learn on how to do things in the nontechnical manner firsst. Listen to the professors in the UK. They complain about the students whining and complaining about having to read a book. and what happens if the ipad dies? Oops brain shut down. and that is the other thing. Look at brain research. BRAIN POWER USE IT OR LOSE IT! are we settig a generation up to get dementia at an earlier age because the rely on technology for everything.

  • Amazed at how Steve Jobs continues to innovate. Would love to see him making one last magnanimous gesture and donating iPads to classrooms.
  • Yes, I definately think he will bring Apple to the next level. I think the next thing he will come up with is 3D tablets.
  • Just hoping now that the iPad 2 is hitting the stores that Apple will drop the cost of the orginal version so we can start rolling it out in classrooms without our schools having to take out loans to eqiup our teachers and kids with decent educational tools.
  • This is a very exciting time for the world of educational technology.
  • i hear the ipad two is coming out soon! I got mine the first day it was out and have loved it... can not see myself paying for the new ones though but possibly buying the ipad 3 or 4 lol!

What Apple also does is provide the complete package (hardward and operating system) which means that the device just really works well.

People are getting fed up with expensive laptops that are too slow and will just give up the ghost after a couple of years. Apple make devices that are far more robust.
  • MikeDoug88
Apple are trying to reshape the laptop/PC market and Apple know that they cannot go head-to-head with the Mac vs the PC, so the iPad does the majority of what a laptop does for the masses, so Apple are coming at that market from a different angle.

I think education will be an important market for Apple and if you get them at Uni, you will habve 'em for life... Clever chaps those Apple guys...
  • teach
It does sound nice in theory, however who is going to front the cost of this? Teachers are being excessed every day in order to reduce costs- how about we save the people before we increase the technology
  • Dave
Tablet computers are already extensively used in many school districts, but they're not ipads. Ipads are very much overpriced and lack some of the most important technical features needed in the classroom. One of the school districts near me is making extensive use of the Dell Streak and are quite excited by it. They "test drove" a number of tablets and aside from the price found the ipad too cumbersome, etc, etc
  • I really want to see the change on the education system. By using iPad or tablet or any other reader, it would take the education into a different level
  • This is a good idea. But i think publishing industry will be down. Even though students will love to have tablets instead of books one reason is because it is lightweight than books and instead of bringing a lot of books only an iPad tablet is enough.
  • Kay
This is interesting. The ipad does have the tendency to be widespread in a very short time span because of early adopters. But for the skeptics like myself, I'm definitely trying to get afree ipad through retail stores like restockit. http://tinyurl.com/238d4ba
  • iPad changing education???
All it changes is the media being used to transfer/share information. And that's about it.
That being said, I still prefer using plain old pen and paper when taking down notes. Then just transfer my notes to the iPad with an OCR software.
  • Interesting points...
I think iPad is a welcomed among students and not just..
It is a great alternative for e-readers and an awesome presentation tool as well.
The visual experience and interactivity of the device makes it more engaging, in hence the studying process is more effective..
There are some really useful applications out there for teachers as well...

  • Its obvious that the current system of classroom teaching will have to end in the future. Its way too expensive to have one teacher teaching 30 students. The ipad will help to pave the future of online learning - its already working to some extent but its going to start happening more and more. it will be hard for teachers to accept but their time of lecturing students is ending. Although good teachers will accept this change - i can many "old skool" teachers resisting.
  • while technology may allow higher teacher to student ratios, don't trick yourself into thinking that's a good thing. As cool and useful as some technological advances are, there is an aspect of teaching that technology can't replace, the need for human interaction. What I find most exciting about things like the ipad and similar technologies is the ability they can give to increase interactivity (personal contact) between the teacher and the student with things like live interactive polling, etc.

Should more teachers embrace technology, absolutely. Like Dave mentioned in his reply, it's amazing how many teacher's are technophobes and how many poor students are technological prodigies. A teacher should interact and inspire their students in what ever way best connects with the students. (Good) teaching has never really been about lecturing or the simple conveyance of knowledge. Good teaching is about inspiration, motivation and discovery. Simple lectures have always gone in one ear and out the other if interest wasn't already there on the part of the student. Things like the ipad can help spark that interest in new and exciting ways.

    Ok, off my soapbox... :)
  • teach
Do you think its good for the economy to have more people unemployed? Technology should be implemented- but it should not take the place of human contact. We will create a society of people who have no social cues- or interpersonal skills.
  • Dave
I use to own an internet cafe and had a lot of kids about ages 10-18 come in and mainly play games on the pcs (I gave extra time if they could prove they had finished their homework for the day). One day I overheard one kid give another kid detailed many stepped instructions on how to get from point A to point B in the World of Warcraft. A while later I heard them arguing and when I went over to see what they were arguing about it was whether or not Buffalo was in NY(my cafe was in Albany) and whether it was east or west!!! As you stated not only is the current educational system too expensive but it just doesn't work for certain types of kids. The kids in my cafe, were mainly from "stressed families" and indifferent students, but most of them were learning magnets when it came to things they were interested in, but the local school district managed to destroy any interest those kids might have in the things the schools were teaching. I also had a lot of "educators" come in the cafe and they were just the opposite of the kids. Most of them seemed to be technophobic to one degree or another and seemed to have a very hard time learning anything new. The prime example of this was when I had a teacher come in to use my scanner with OCR and word processing software. He didn't know how to use the scanner and after about the 5th trip over to help him I asked him to take notes so I didn't have to keep coming back. He got quite irate and said "I don't have the time to take notes!!! I'm a teacher, do you job". I'd had a long day and just threw him out. I brought up the idea of making more extensive use of computers in the actual teaching process with one of the other teachers who I thought would be receptive to the idea and she also got what I thought was inappropriately irate and practically screamed "No computer can replace a teacher!!" I think it's going to take a lot of pressure to get the educational establishment to change. With the charter school movement having taken off I'm sort of disappointed that very few of them seem to be making much use of technology.
  • Agree Danny - more one on one and e-learning. My daughter's now playing something called mathletrics onlne .. she's learning maths much faster on the computer than she is in class, so iPads definitely have a role to play
  • Great article. Really agree with the sentiments, although I suspect it'll take a quite some time before we see tablets being deployed .. I mean most schools have only got to mimio! remember all the talk a few years ago of the $100 laptop .. maybe we need to persaude steve jobs to push out a $100 ipad for the education market! how's that for social responsibility.
  • we recently funded some teachers to equip them with ipads so they can use technology .. and we're in deepest africa .. the world is awake!
  • Hey, nice and crisp. I like the way this has been crafted. Keep up the great work.

I strongly believe that technology is either going to save humanity and free it or used improperly enslave it and then destroy it.

Leaving the apocalypse scenarios behind I have to agree that the ipad is a remarcable success not only as a great device (because it is one) but for the way Apple is promoting it also. Have you ever been to an Applestore ? They let you play with everything for free...

They are making that connection between the seller and the customer which other companies fail to achieve.

Great technology spread all around the world can really change education. Educated people live better (or should at least increase the quality of life if you don't count stress) have higher chances in life so why not make the change ? Why not get technology really cheap to help people all around the world ?

As a teacher, I am extremely excited about what the iPad has to offer to our students and how it will change the future of education. We have to get our students excited about learning! Studies show that students learn best by DOING. Does that mean we should ONLY use technology in todays classrooms? No, of course not. But it should be used in creative ways to help engage and excite students to new concepts, when reviewing, or if they are having difficulty understanding. My friend and I just created an educational app called SMARTY SHORTZ for the iPhone, iPod, and iPad. It is six subjects with four lessons each (24 total) and four games to reinforce what the student just learned (24 total). It is a great supplementary tool for students 6-9 years of age. We have another one coming out soon for Kindergarten. I would love to get feedback on it. Here is the link:

    http://itunes.apple.com/app/sm... for the iPhone and

    http://itunes.apple.com/app/sm... for the iPad
  • The iPad is great as well because it's so simple to use, grade schoolers can use them and find plenty of educational apps, and college students can most certainly find lots of uses for them. Those apps you made Lusanne are awesome!

Once the new iPad comes out with the camera as well, I can only imagine how it will change the face of homeschooling where students chat with their teachers and class online and do the assignments at home.

I was reading an environmental website the other day, and they actually realized that using the iPad was good for the environment and all the paper it saved actually reduced their carbon footprint by quite a bit. So you are right when you say the environment thanks you! Imagine the difference these tablets could make in that aspect alone!
