Encouraging Mathematical Communication Skills (Grades K-2)

Course Description:

Discover the role that communication plays in your teaching and in your students' learning while also investigating the importance of connecting mathematical instruction to everyday experiences. Increase your familiarity with and understanding of the NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) process standards of communication and connections. Investigate effective questioning, how to help students clarify and deepen their thinking, the importance of making connections among mathematical ideas, and how to assess your personal formal and informal mathematics communication. Through videos, interactive activities, and problem solving, you will explore content and activities to help you teach students how to organize and consolidate their mathematical thinking through communication. You will also learn how to teach students to communicate their thinking coherently and clearly to peers, teachers, and others by using the language of mathematics to express ideas precisely. At the end of the course, learners earn a Certificate of Completion.

Note: This is a self-paced course accessible for one year after enrollment, and not eligible for graduate credit.
