Teaching Reading Fluency

Course Description:

Explore fluency’s role in reading while mastering research-based instructional practices for supporting K-5 students as they develop skills in the three dimensions of fluency: accuracy, automatic processing, and prosody, or the patterns and rhythm of language. You will walk away from this course with:

• A better understanding of the relationship between fluency and reading comprehension

• Practical, research-based practices for building students’ reading fluency through modeling and repetition

• Quantitative and qualitative techniques to assess and improve students’ fluency and evaluate fluency
• Technology resources to help nurture students’ fluency progress

Note: This is a facilitated course. Learners submit coursework and participate in asynchronous discussions throughout the course term, and receive graded feedback.

Classroom Link-Access to students recommended. PBS Classroom Link courses ask learners to implement lessons with their class or with a small group of students (options for learners without access to students are available).
