Fostering Mathematical Reasoning Skills (Grades K-2)

Course Section Description:

Discover the role that reasoning and proof plays in teaching and in student learning while also investigating the importance of connecting mathematical instruction to everyday experiences. Increase familiarity with and understanding of the NCTM (National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) process standards of reasoning and proof and connections. Investigate how to help students build new mathematical knowledge by using logical thinking and reasoning to generate and solidify mathematical ideas. Observe students' thinking about mathematics and their efforts to draw conclusions and make generalizations as they connect their new knowledge to the world around them. Learn how to assess your own personal formal and informal reasoning and proof skills. Through Annenberg Learner videos, interactive activities, and problem solving, explore content and activities to help students learn how to reason, using skills connected to real-life problem situations.

Note: This is a self-paced course accessible for one year after enrollment, and not eligible for graduate credit.
