Architecture (3-12)

Includes studying the creative design of our built environment; the architect as someone manifesting artistic expression; and comparative study of different architectural styles and traditions in various cultures and eras; does not include the engineering aspects of construction, which fall under "Engineering" within the "Science" section.

Art History (6-12)

Includes the historical study of the visual arts for the purpose of identifying, describing, evaluating, interpreting, and understanding art objects and artistic traditions. (Source: Britannica.com)

Crafts (PreK-5)

Includes "arts and crafts" projects that students can create in a relatively short time with common materials; also includes learning about traditional crafts such as quilting, needlepoint, jewelry making, etc. May also cover the study of crafts from different cultures.

Creative Thinking (PreK-12)

Includes the development of skills that enable flexible, original, imaginative, innovative, or elaborative ways of thinking about an existing or new idea. Focuses on specific applications within the visual and performing arts.

Critical Thinking Skills (3-12)

Includes the analysis, interpretation, or questioning of artwork to determine quality or meaning or expand self-knowledge; also includes the ability to form artwork that has specific meaning or is representative of an idea.

Dance (PreK-12)

Includes the formal study of dance traditions, history, performers, disciplines, movements, etc.; also includes artistic performance-based movement and the study of dance in different cultures.

Drama/Dramatics (PreK-12)

Includes the study of all aspects of theater and acting, such as performance, technique, stage production and theatrical history.

Film (6-12)

Includes study of film as an art form; filmmaking techniques; the history of motion pictures; and the impact of films on individuals and society.

Media Studies (K-12)

Includes understanding the characteristics and components of the media. Focuses on the "how to" aspects of media production, including design, layout, message delivery and receipt, organization, and audience appeal.

Music (PreK-12)

Includes the study of instruments, musicians, genres of music, rhythms and sounds, student musical performance, music history and the study of the music of different cultures.

Photography (3-12)

Includes the creation and study of photographic visual media, including the study of photographers.

Storytelling (PreK-12)

Includes the presentation of oral stories and the study of methods used to tell stories effectively. Focuses on the theatrical aspects of storytelling; does not include the language and reading components of storytelling.

Visual Arts (PreK-12)

Includes the formal study of painting, sculpture, drawing, murals, pottery, printing, and other forms of art that appeal primarily to the visual senses; also includes the study of artists associated with visual works of art and the visual arts of different cultures.
